Net metering is an electric billing system that credits a customer for the excess generation (electricity) produced by their solar system.  The credit amount is often referred to as a "buyback rate".  

Buyback rates for excess generation vary but are typically credited and rolled over to the next billing cycle as a kilowatt-per-hour credit.
